Necessarily.
Key word
Google just "steampunk" and you'll mainly run into goth stuff, things that looks like they're about to break, and broken glass
That's mainly dystopian steampunk though, which is more popular (I think), due to the heavy amount of goth influences in todays culture

Okay, Im going to say this one time

Hollywood has yet to do anything steampunk that is good.
Dont look to them for reference.

Seriously, find a steampunk forum, there are quite a few out there, and check things out. Youll get a better idea of what Mr ZKX is talking about. He is a good man, with good ideas

Or not. Ain't changin' a thing.

Steampunk is in the eye of the beholder. Who's to say anyone has any right to say LXG or HDM isn't steampunk? Can I rely on my own judgment and creativity or do I have to base everything on some rigid definition?

And ZKX may be a good man, but he's yet to offer any kind of useful criticism. I am still waiting.

I concur.

...Cautiously. I'll admit right now that I really don't know a hell of a lot about steampunk. I know steam-powered everything, Victorian setting, and goggles, but that's about where my knowledge ends.

I concur with the addendum
The movie amused me greatly when I was little, but now...not so much
Still amuses me though

Steampunk is both an old-style sci-fi and a fantasy. That is how I view it. So some rigid definition is for the uncreative. Bending the rules a bit, going beyond preset rules is what makes a fantasy a fantasy and Steampunk is definitely a form of fantasy. So I say be creative and don't let anyone bugger you about that.

Edit: Just read ZKX's post... it... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... it... um er... wow... somebody needs to check up on Steampunk.

I've always thought that steampunk is not so much dystopia as cyberpunk and post apocalyptic games.
Maybe the pollution and disease part. But not the miserable conditions of life except for the street urchins ect.
The rich are rich and the poor are poor.

Perhaps what we need is a bit more steampipes and gears all around. I know that those things are expected at least. Some random large machines for nothing and so on.

the towns in ff3 work well for finding chips with pipes, and fans and stuff.
And ripping select elements of every other scifi tileset will do wonders.

Now, now. Do you think Aunt Val would let you down with a drought of large, pointless machines and random gears and pipes? You just sit yourself down in that nice comfy chair and wait.

Great work, but im not really a fan of your style. Theres something about it that i cant quite put my finger on, but i dont like it whatever it is. But from a purely technical standpoint this is great.

It's p[robly because it's so smoot and flawless. Kind of like Waraxe's weapon and chara spriting, but better.
