Charas - Here and now
« on: April 07, 2007, 11:22:50 PM »
Have you noticed the amount of members leaving?  Have you noticed the amount of new people come here, and leave because of how some of us treat them?  What can we do to make charas better now?  Sure we can wait for Charas 3.0, but what about until then?  I may not be an older member, but I've been here long enough to see that charas members need to change how they act towards newer people.  Not everyone here is mean, one that come into my mind is lonewolf... he goes out of is way to fulfill requests.  Anyone else have some suggestions?

I completely agree.  I mean, if someone new does post a request on the first post, then they should be told nicely to please introduce themselves in the welcome thread. Even to actually fulfill the request and also tell them to introduce themselves, nicely, may keep people here.

I think we should start a thread in the All of All! talking about things we should do to try and keep people here and keep them coming, and how to improve charas now (not the charas 3.0).  Because I think this topic is beginning to begin something like that.[/B]

Okay, so it looks like everyone is leaving because all these people that have been here and make charas part of what it is have left.  But at least they come back to visit every once in a while.

So far, from reading replies i see things about:

- more projects may help
- a spam forum
- an arcade
- more requests being fulfilled
and so on...

I personally don't really fill requests.
If it was a project I was into maybe.

I try to give information on HOW to do it yourself if I can.

Fulfilling or not fulfilling a request isn't gonna cut it.

And NOT fulfilling a request dosen't make you a shitty member.

After all, it's not called makeallmycrapforme_forums.net.

Alot of the new members that join and leave are trying, only to get things made for them. Even if these requests are filled, chances are the person would leave as soon as novelty and intrest failed.

You know what charas needs? More active projects. Some Games, you know?

Even like, system demos.

We do need more projects and games.  I mean, I am trying to get somethings done.  Charas has helped me with a lot of things for my projects.

My guess is that charas was good when people posted things. Things like "What movie do you like" or "Whats your favorite color?", back in the day, there were tons of topics like this. Now it seems people got embarassed of writing silly stuff for the sake of it.

From reading the "History of Charas" article on the wiki, everything came downhill after that troll invasion.  But the hardest hit may have been when alex left...

No. I haven't seen new members be running away after being flammed. I've seen, however, members leaving out of boredon.

Like I said in MrMister's goodbye topic, pretty much everyday I log on (which is pretty much everyday) there is a new goodbye topic, which kind of scares me.  I probably won't leave charas for at least three to four years, so I'll be a long time member.  I just can't believe MrMister's basic description of charas in his goodbye topic's title.  I mean, if we work at it, we can make charas better.
Suggestions:
When a newbie does something stupid, don't yell at them, be nice and tell them to try to fix what ever they did wrong.

When a newbie requests on the first post, ask them nicely to post a hello in the welcome thread, and if you can, not saying you have to, but try and fulfill the request, its okay if you can't just tell them after asking to to post in the welcome section that you are sorry but you can't do the request and ask someone else if they can.

We need some things to boost charas morale too.

I've noticed that a lot of the new members that appear on the main page never post.  They join, and I never see the name again.

Oh, don't take that too seriously. Mister's just pissy that the admins got mad at him for ignoring what Razor said about that now-locked thread. MrMister probably realized that none of the current admins like him a whole heck of a lot and that he's always been on the razor's edge of being fired.

I'll admit giving him an important mod position was a bad move on my part. He's not nice, has never been nice, and showed no signs of ever being nice. He may have a few friends here but when he's being a jerk to so much of the population of the site it he was doing way more harm than good.

A spam forum. I've been thinking for a while, and those are most times the most movimented part of a forum.

Well, I miself thought it'd be a good idea to give him the post. Mostly because he'd be the bad cop. We are full of good cops mods and admin, but almost no bad cop.

Well, if people have a place just to spam and say random things, it may create an outlet where you can just say what you want to say, without the worry of "if i make a new topic for this, people might get mad at me because they think its stupid and has no reason to be here at all" or something like that.

What can we do? Nothing. There are key factors as to why.

First, the requests. The few remaining spriters, myself included, usually don't bother answering requests because most end up taking and leaving. Even worst, most games will end up being deleted. Waste of time and efforts.

Second, more games. In most cases, if your game doesn't have flashy custom stuff, it'll just blend in the rest and people will stop paying attention. People live on flashy graphics and system, that's all there is to it.

Third, MrMister. Like him, hate him, it doesn't matter. In the end, it's a matter of respect. Show respect and if someone don't respect you back, ignore him/her. You'll be a better person.

Fourth, people that are leaving/joining. People are born, people die. The harsh reality. Although some members' retarded behaviors might play a role in the balance.

Fifth and final, a spam forum. One of the forum I go to has a forum to post all your random crapola. If you can disable post counts and give minimum guidelines then yeah, that's an idea. You can't imagine how many people are dying to make 'The Meh Thread' and just spam 'Meh' to their heart content.

Yeah, that's it. My two cents.

blackskullwarlock, such a negative attitude!  There is always a way to make things better, but only if you try.

If you want to fix a situation, you have to see the black side of it as much as the white side. Figured I'd take the role of the devil just this once.
